In tonight’s illustrated lecture, Kurt Hollander-Mexico City-based author and photographer of Several Ways to Die in Mexico City-will discuss images of death in Mexico City, beginning with what he terms Mexico’s “holy gore”-Mexico’s unusually macabre and violent religious statues-and ending with la Santa Muerte, Mexico’s newest cult saint worshiped by the criminal class and the disenfranchised and loathed by the Catholic church. Kurt Hollander is originally from New York City but has been living in Mexico City since 1989. He is a writer, photographer, literary translator and filmmaker. He was the editor of The Portable Lower East Side from 1982-92, and editor of Poliester, a contemporary art magazine of the Americas, from 1993-2000. He is the author of Sonora: The Magic Market (RM 2008) and El Super (RM 2006), photo-books on popular Mexican culture. He wrote and directed Carambola (2005), a feature film, pseudo-documentary on the world of three-cushion billiards. Kurt has written for the London Guardian, Guernica, The Ecologist, Salon and Wherever. He has had several solo exhibitions of his photographs in Mexico and the USA.
