The Morbid Anatomy Museum is proud to bring together what be a truly inspired pairing of sight and sound. The film is well known for its strange, theatrical, German Expressionist sets, lurching at threatening angles, the peak-roofed houses aligned on a hillside like the teeth of a predatory beast, the streets of the town rendered an abstract maze of diagonals and trapezoids, the local clerk sitting at an absurdly tall desk in honor of his self-importance.

An amalgam of somnambulism, murder, and madness, the film features the menacing Conrad Veidt as Cesare, a catatonic fortuneteller under the sway of the malevolent mesmerist Caligari, played by the bespectacled Werner Krauss. A scheming, bent-over mountebank, Caligari stows away the wraith like Cesare inside of a wooden box when not displaying him in his carnival sideshow. But suspicion falls upon the gruesome pair when nocturnal murder visits the town.

“The Cabinet of Dr Caligari” will be presented in all of its analog splendor on 16mm film, with a live score performed by the inimitable M.V. Carbon, whose spectral sonic palette is the ideal musical counterpart to the film’s uncanny visuals.

M.V. Carbon is a Brooklyn based composer and sound artist who is recognized for her non-traditional approach to music. She plays cello and other stringed instruments through electronics, and uses tape machines, vocals, electronic processes, analog synthesis, frequency, tone, and imagery to remove obstacles while inducing physical commotion.

She started her music career in Chicago with projects such as the electronic noise duo, Metalux (Hanson, Load, Rampage, 5RC) and the mysterious shrouded 4 piece known as Bride of No No. (Atavistic Records). She relocated to the New York City area in 2005 and has continued writing and performing with Metalux (MV Carbon and Jenny Gräf Sheppard), while focusing on her solo work. Carbon’s solo record The Dislodged Perihelion is released on Ecstatic Peace (US), and her forthcoming LP, The Sun Will Turn on You, is set to be released on Discombobulate Records (UK) this fall. http://mvcarbon.com/
