The Public Corpse: Death Rituals and the Spaces Dedicated to Them in Rome

An Illustrated Lecture by Elizabeth Harper

Date: Monday, November 3rd
Time: 8pm
Admission: $8 ( Tickets Here )
Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 A Third Avenue, Brooklyn ( At the corner of 7th Street. )

Death is not the end of the road for Catholics in Italy. Though the public display of corpses and bones may seem macabre, these traditions illustrate a spiritual and physical journey that begins at death. It’s a journey that takes us through the liminal spaces between here and the afterlife and between flesh and bone; where the impermanence and embarrassment of the human body and it’s functions only underscores the permanence and dignity of the soul.
In this illustrated talk, we’ll take a virtual walking-tour of Rome through its crypts, purgatorial societies, tombs and shrines.

Elizabeth photographs and writes about Catholic relics and other oddities for her blog, All the Saints You Should Know, a project originally started as a way to document and demystify the bones and bodies found in churches all over the world. She’s a regular contributor to Atlas Obscura and her work has been featured on Slate, LA Magazine and MSN.com. She’s a member of the Order of the Good Death and has previously given talks at Death Salon LA and San Francisco and at the Morbid Anatomy Library.
